Kanotix is a full-fledged Linux distribution running from CD with a graphical environment (KDE, K Desktop Environment) based on Debian Sid with tools from Knoppix. Kanotix has excellent hardware detection and is specialized for hard disk installation. This CD can also be used as so called "live-CD". This means you don't need a hard disk drive in this operation mode. All programs run from CD. Even when running from CD you still have access to the hard disks, USB keys, floppy disks and CD ROM drives of any computer on which you run it. Data on NTFS partitions can be read, too (write access with captive is experimental, so any harm is at your own risk). This qualifies Kanotix as a suitable tool for data recovery and virus removal on Windows PCs! Kanotix is optimized for the i586 architecture and therefore not appropriate for older CPUs. Your system should possess at least 128 MB of RAM but 256 MB are recommended.
The latest release is "KANOTIX 200504" (31/12/2005) with the Kernel 2.6.14.5 and KDE 3.4.3 Kanotix includes a lot of useful programs, which cover most needed applications:
There is also a lite version of Kanotix (without OpenOffice, LATEX and some other tools, but with Koffice).

This guide book is based on the german Kanotix Wiki and describes the installation procedure beginning from version 2005-04. The configuration of printer, network, monitor as well as the system update is explained. More detailed information can be found in the Kanotix-Wiki (german), Forum (english and german) and IRC chat.
