2 How to burn a Kanotix-CD

2.1 Under Linux

Whoever already has a running Linux system on his PC can create the CD with any available burning tool. Of course this is also possible with the Kanotix Live-CD and the burning tool K3b or a command line tool (as described below). The following description applies to K3b >= 0.12.1:

choose in the menu bar under tools burn - CD Image... the corresponding downloaded Kanotix iso file.

At first the MD5 sum will be automatically checked. If this MD5 sum is the same as the one of the file KANOTIX200504.iso.MD5 then your download was successful and the file can be burned be pushing the Start button.

You can also burn the CD direct via console with the following command:

cdrecord dev=0,0,0 driveropts=burnfree fs=14M speed=12 -dao -overburn -v KANOTIX-2005-04.iso

If you want to use a CD-RW use the following command: blank=fast

cdrecord dev=0,0,0 driveropts=burnfree blank=fast fs=14M speed=12 -dao -overburn -v KANOTIX-2005-04.iso

2.2 Under Windows

Of course, you can also burn the iso file under Windows. First, check the md5 sum. K3b does this (as described above) by default, but it's a rather uncommon procedure under Windows. If the MD5 sum is the same as the one of the downloaded file KANOTIX-2005-04.iso.MD5 you can burn the file to a CDR or CD RW. The file must be burned as an iso file.

But suppose the file extension *.iso is associated to Winrar. Newbies sometimes get confused because they get the impression the file is an archive. Under no circumstances burn the iso file as normal file. Otherwise Kanotix will not run. Make sure to burn the iso file in Disc at once (DAO) mode!

2.2.1 Trouble Shooting

If your CD seems to be corrupted please check:

Occasionally, higher writing speeds cause problems too. Thus it's wise to burn with half the maximum writing speed. If it's still to no avail you can deactivate DMA and ACPI. Check the boot settings of your PC (Preparation). Additionally check your burned CD on another PC.
